New cross-border gas interconnection under development: Plinovodi and FGSZ signed a Letter of Intent

19. 03. 2026
The planned interconnection will contribute to greater security of supply and improved interconnection of transmission systems in the region. It will enable greater diversification of gas supply sources and further strengthen energy security. At the same time, the new infrastructure will be designed for the future transport of renewable gases such as hydrogen and biomethane.

Budapest, 19 March 2026 – The gas transmission system operators of Slovenia and Hungary, Plinovodi d.o.o. and FGSZ Földgázszállító Zrt., today signed a Letter of Intent for the joint development of a new cross-border gas interconnection between the two countries. The project is aimed at strengthening security of gas supply, improving the interconnection of transmission systems and supporting the further developing regional energy infrastructure.

The project represents an important step toward enhancing regional energy security and the resilience of the energy system in Central Europe. The new bidirectional gas transmission interconnection between the two countries will enable two‑way gas flows, thereby strengthening opportunities for diversification of supply sources, improving access to gas storage facilities in the region and increasing the flexibility and stability of gas supply across the wider area.

The planned initial capacity of the gas interconnection will be 50,000 m³/h, with the possibility of a later expansion to 190,000 m³/h, which could enable the formation of a wider regional gas corridor in the future.

By signing the Letter of Intent, both companies confirm their shared commitment to the further development of the project and to the launch of technical, development, and investment activities that will form the basis for the final investment decision and the implementation of the project.

Infrastructure Prepared for Future Energy Carriers

In planning the project, the companies are also considering the long‑term objectives of the energy transition. The new infrastructure will therefore also be technically prepared for the future transport of renewable gases such as hydrogen and biomethane.

On the occasion of signing the Letter of Intent, Matija Bitenc, M.Sc., Managing Director of Plinovodi d.o.o., emphasized:

“This step represents an important milestone in the further development of energy infrastructure and the interconnection of gas transmission systems in the region.

The project contributes to greater reliability and flexibility of gas supply, while at the same time being planned in a way that will also make it ready for future energy carriers such as hydrogen and biomethane. In this way, we are creating the conditions for a stable and technologically adaptable energy system of the future.”
