Development of hydrogen transmission projects

One of the key goals of Slovenia by 2030, in line with the National Energy and Climate Plan adopted by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on December 18, 2024, is to reduce the use of fossil energy sources and dependence on their imports. This goal will be achieved also through the implementation of pilot projects for the production of synthetic methane and hydrogen, with an indicative goal of achieving a 10% share of renewable methane or hydrogen in the transmission and distribution system by 2030.

The gas transmission system operator is already carrying out activities to prepare the transmission system for the injection and operation with hydrogen and renewable gases. The transmission system operator will ensure that gas transmission infrastructure will be ready for the injection of gases from renewable energy sources (RES), such as hydrogen, synthetic methane, and biomethane, as well as testing the operation of end-user appliances connected to the transmission system with various renewable gas mixtures.

However, the transmission system operator will not be involved in commercial market activities to avoid any subsidization of market activities or violations of certification provisions.

At the same time, the transmission system operator (TSO) will, within the possibilities of cooperation, innovation and cross-border renewable energy projects incentives and related support instruments, strive to seek co-financing opportunities. This approach will contribute to the realization of sustainable projects for decarbonizing the gas sector and achieving long-term climate neutrality goals for the member states of the European community. TSO will align its development activities with the development activities of other European TSOs regarding initiatives and transmission system supply decarbonization planning, cross-border connections and European hydrogen backbone development.

Hydrogen transmission project development

TSO coordinated with the neighboring TSOs two hydrogen corridors spanning across Slovenia and connecting Slovenia with neighboring countries. Both corridors are candidates projects for PCI status.
